When is the best time for spring steelhead?
Our Steelhead start running as soon as the rivers break free of ice. However, the best times to target those fish are when water temps are on the rise. This equates to more active fish in post spawn mode ready to feed. Prime dates are historically towards the middle of April to mid May.
When is the best time to target fall run species like salmon and fall steelhead?
Species such as Pink Salmon will start running in early September. Late September to November will be your best dates for other salmon species like coho or kings.
Fall steelhead are usually brought in by any rains during September or October.
If I want to bring my own gear what should I have?
I recommend either a 9' 8WT or 10' 7WT fly rod for steelhead and larger salmon species. Please have reels spooled up with weight forward indicator style lines.
For pink salmon a 4-6WT fly rod is adequate. Again, indicator style lines are preferred but trout tapers work fine as well.
I will proivide all leader and tippet.
Conventional gear should consist of a 8-10 FT medium power fast action rod with a reel spooled up with 10-12 lb mono. Alot of my customers prefer high vis lines. I will provide all leader material.
How far will i have to travel?
Becuase we have access to so many rivers we can either fish locally around Duluth or make the run up to Grand Marais. Travel time is not included in my rates so with any location you will always get a full 4 or 8 hours of fishing time.
How should I dress?
Lake Superior can heavily influence weather conditions. Please dress adequately for the forecast but do not be afraid to pack extra layers. I also recommend a rain jacket on all days.
I have limited mobility, can i still fish?
Yes! Because of the wide selection of water to choose from we can always find somewhere to get you comfortably on the water and fishing succesfully.
